A customer contacted Paul The Locksmith after finding she could not lock her patio doors. This type of issue can leave a home insecure, so it needed to be inspected and repaired as quickly as possible. On arrival, the patio door was checked and the fault was traced to a failed gearbox within the locking mechanism. The gearbox is the central part of the locking system and, when it fails, the door may no longer lock correctly even if the handles and cylinder appear to be working. As a range of replacement gearboxes is carried on the van, the faulty unit was removed and replaced during the same visit. The patio doors were then checked, adjusted where required, lubricated and fully tested to make sure everything was locking smoothly before leaving the property. This was a straightforward same-visit repair, saving the customer the delay and inconvenience of waiting for parts to be ordered.

Entry was gained safely, the failed lock was removed and a replacement 5-lever sashlock was supplied and fitted. The door was then tested and left operating correctly.

Today's job in South Shields involved a customer having increasing difficulty locking and operating their uPVC door. After diagnosing the issue, the fault was traced to a failed gearbox inside the multipoint locking mechanism. Many people assume the full locking strip or even the entire door needs replacing when these faults occur, but in many cases the issue can be isolated to the gearbox itself. Replacing the faulty gearbox restored the operation of the lock and got everything working smoothly again. Catching these faults early can help avoid further wear and prevent ending up with a door that becomes difficult — or impossible — to lock and unlock.
uPVC Door Repair — South Shields
This uPVC door had suffered a complete gearbox failure and could no longer operate correctly. On inspection, the euro cylinder was also the wrong size and protruded around 10mm outside the handle, creating a potential lock snapping risk. The existing handle was also damaged and missing a fixing screw. The failed gearbox was replaced, a correct-sized thumbturn cylinder was fitted, and a new handle was installed. The door was then reassembled, adjusted and fully tested. The customer was left with a smooth-operating door and improved security.
